I'll admit it - I used to always book the smallest car when booking a car rental in an attempt to save money.  You know that tiny car that the car rental company really does not want to rent - I would take it.  Well, that might not be the smartest decision anymore.  Car rental companies frequently have car rental coupons that are only good on some of those larger cars.  (Here is one example - if you rent the "luxury" class car with Hertz, you get $50 off for a week - see Hertz Coupon.)  Many times, the larger car with a car rental coupon is actually cheaper than a smaller car witthout a coupon.  Check it out on your next rental.

Hertz is offering up to $50 off weekly rates at its Orlando Airport location for Luxury class (or higher level) cars. This $35 off a weekly car rental special can potentially save you quite a bit of money since you can use it on the least expensive class of cars (economy class cars). Travel Deal of the Day (May 1, 2009)

There are some excellent car rental deals in Florida right now. If you are interested in a one-way rental, there are unique opportunities when renting a car in Florida.

The Deal:
At most non-Florida locations, when you pick up a car in one location and drop it off in another location, you are likely to pay either a very high daily rate or a large "drop off" fee associated with the cost to the car rental company to return the car to the place where you originally picked up the car. In Florida, you will likely pay the same price for a one-way rental as you would for a traditional rental. Note this when you plan a Florida trip as you may be able to see a larger area of Florida.

There are also unique deals when picking up a car in Florida and dropping the car off elsewhere in the United States. Hertz, for instance, has a deal (see this link) that provides discounted rates when picking up in Florida and dropping off at participating locations elsewhere in the US. The car rental companies are willing to offer such discounts to you as they need to move the cars out of Florida for the summer months. Be sure to look out for these kinds of deals if you need to travel one-way from Florida.

Hertz is offering 50% off of its rates for weekend rentals at airport locations.

The Deal:
Receive 50% off of standard rates for Hertz weekend rentals of at least two days through June 2009. Sale rates are valid for economy through full-size cars at participating US (including Puerto Rico) airport locations, excluding Hawaii.

Travel Deal of the Day (December 31, 2007)

With fuel over $3/gallon, it can be quite expensive to fill a rental car’s fuel tank. Hertz has an offer for free gas to lower the total cost of a car rental and to help deal with the high cost of fuel.

The Deal:
Get a free tank of gas when renting a Hertz car for at least three days. The offer applies for cars picked up by January 18, 2008. The deal applies even for the most reasonably priced "economy" class cars.

The Inside Scoop:
The value of this coupon varies based on how "empty" your fuel tank is when you return the car. If you return the car on "empty" and the car holds around 15 to 18 gallons, this coupon is probably worth around $50, which is an excellent discount for a three day rental.

Hertz is offering a sale on its local (off-airport) rates, starting at $22/day.

The Deal:
