If you are trying to plan a vacation for later this year, you should consider traveling during the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to find great rates.

The Deal:
Find great rates on airfare and hotel by traveling during the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Though both Thanksgiving week and Christmas week (week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve) are extremely high-demand times for vacations, the time between those two holidays is a great time to travel due to lower demand (and lower prices). You can often find free night deals at hotels and highly discounted airfare.

Travel Deal of the Day (September 26, 2007)

If you are traveling to Las Vegas, you may want to consider seeing a Las Vegas show. You can often obtain highly discounted show tickets for Las Vegas shows (just like discounts available for Broadway shows in New York City) with a little extra effort.

The Deal:
Obtain discounted tickets to Las Vegas shows via half-price ticket brokers on the Las Vegas Strip. Brokers such as “Tix 4 Tonight” and “Tickets2Nite” offer discounted tickets for Las Vegas shows. These brokers usually do not have tickets for the most popular shows, but usually do have tickets for most of the favorites. Tix 4 Tonight also offers coupons (off of its discounted show ticket prices) on its website.

How:

If you are thinking about taking a Caribbean vacation later this year, the four-star Westin St. John is running a sale you may want to consider.

The Deal:
The Westin St. John in the US Virgin Islands is running two different specials for travel later this year: (1) Enjoy 30% off of your 3+ night stay for trips until November 30, 2007 or (2) obtain a rate of $269/night for trips through the end of 2007. Though $269 is not a low rate for very off-peak travel dates, this is a very good rate for the highest peak dates near the November and December holidays.

If you are booking a Marriott hotel, you should look into Marriott Rewards special rates.

The Deal:
Marriott does not always publish the existence of Marriott Rewards Club special rates, but these rates are often available at quite a discount when compared with standard rates. To find Marriott Rewards rates, use the code “M11” when checking for rates at http://www.marriott.com/. To join Marriott Rewards, go to http://www.marriottrewards.com/. Please note, you must join Marriott Rewards before using a Marriott Rewards rate.

Travel Deal of the Day (September 18, 2007)

Have you considered renting a condo or vacation home during your next vacation? You may be able to save a considerable amount of money when compared with a hotel. Now, there are great resources to find vacation rentals.

The Deal:
Many people only consider hotels for lodging during vacations. You may save money by renting a vacation home or condo directly from the owner of the property. Quite often, you can find vacation lodging in a prime location (such as a direct oceanfront location or a ski lodge very close to the slopes) at quite a discount to an equivalent hotel room. In fact, most vacation rental units are quite a bit larger than hotel rooms and often include kitchen facilities.

How:
The most cumbersome way to find a vacation rental is via the Classifieds Section of a newspaper in the vacation area. This method still works and you can often find vacation listing on the website of the newspaper. A better way to find vacation rentals now is to use Vacation Rentals By Owner – http://www.vrbo.com/. As with any other purchase, since no website can guarantee that every renter is honest, verify the facts about your vacation rental (request pictures of the unit, or, if you know someone in the area of the rental unit, have someone inspect the rental unit) and use a credit card to pay for the rental, if at all possible.

I have previously discussed Maui deals – here is another one to note. The Westin Maui is offering a deal with 35% off of normal rates, free breakfast and 10,000 Starwood Preferred Guest points for travel over the next few weeks.

The Deal:

How:
Go to the Westin Maui Deal.

The Inside Scoop:
On August 9, I noted that the Westin Maui was also selling rooms through Priceline at $125/night, an extraordinary deal. If you are OK with the downsides to booking on Priceline (see August 9 post), you may want to consider booking via Priceline to get the lowest rate at a four-star hotel in Maui.

Travel Deal of the Day (September 11, 2007)

If you are planning a trip on a budget, you might be focusing on how your airfare varies when you change your travel dates. Before you plan you trip based solely on the days/times you can find the best airfare, you should take a step back and look at the entire vacation price.

The Deal:
When planning a trip, people will often shift dates based on small differences in the price of airfare. It may be smarter, however, to focus items which you pay for each day of your vacation such as nightly hotel prices. Here is an example – you may decide to go a day earlier on your vacation to save $20 on airfare. If you have a family of four, that can save you $80. Many people will ignore the cost of the hotel that extra night or whether going or coming on different days will make you ineligible for a package or weekend rate (for hotel or car rental) that you might otherwise obtain.

The smart way to plan a trip is to measure how the total trip cost varies when you change your vacation dates. The great part of this analysis is that you may realize that extending your vacation actually lowers your total trip cost.

Travel Deal of the Day (September 4, 2007)

The New York Times reports that short/quick vacations are the new trend in vacations. People often shift to shorter vacations to miss less work and to save money. Many people think of Thursday-Sunday as the traditional "long weekend" vacation. If you are thinking about going away for a "long weekend," a simple shift in your dates can save you a tremendous amount of money.

The Deal:
When many people plan a trip for a “long weekend,” the natural inclination is to plan a trip for Thursday-Sunday. If you are trying to be cost-conscious, switching your four-day trip to Friday-Tuesday or Saturday-Wednesday can often save you more money. Why? Airfare for a Sunday return can often be more expensive than a Tuesday or Wednesday return. Also, airline and hotel weekend specials are often less expensive when your trip ends on a day other than Sunday.
