Travel Deal of the Day (June 21, 2010)

If you rent cars frequently, you may have become aware of the difference between primary car rental insurance coverage and secondary car rental insurance coverage - primary coverage will step in before your own automobile insurance to cover eligible claims. Because many people want to avoid filing claims against their primary automobile insurance, people often seek out primary car rental coverage, though such coverage can be very expensive (if purchased from the car rental company) or very hard to find (if relying upon your own credit card or other sources).

Note that there are ways of obtaining primary car rental coverage. You should check with your bank or credit union to verify the protections available from your credit card. One example is the Delta Community Credit Union which offers primary coverage for qualifying rentals purchased using their Visa card (restrictions apply). Seeking out this information before you rent can save you a lot of money (saving you from the car rental insurance fees charged by the car rental companies or from the automobile insurance premium increases that can occur if you have to file a claim with your automobile insurance).

Travel Deal of the Day (June 16, 2010)

Most change fees (for tickets on US airlines) are quite expensive; fees often start at $150/ticket. American Airlines has a new option (named "Your Choice") for economy class, non-elite passengers available at the time you purchase your ticket allowing you to purchase an option offering $75 off the change fee as well as priority boarding and the ability to standby for a flight for free. The price of this option may vary based on your itinerary, but the introductory price seems to be around $10/way.

If you are purchasing a highly restrictive ticket for a participating American Airlines itinerary and you feel confident that you may need to change your ticket or fly standby, you may want to investigate whether to purchase the "Your Choice" option. If you are flying on Air Canada, you may want to check out the "Air Canada Stopover" program. If you are traveling on participating flights with at least a six hour layover (including overnight layovers), you may be eligible for a free or highly discounted hotel in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver during your stopover. Participating hotels are free for "Executive Class" and "Latitude" tickets. If you qualify, you can use the deal in both directions of a roundtrip Air Canada ticket. Are you ever paying for long distance from your hotel room? If so, STOP. You should never have to pay the exorbitant hotel long distance prices, especially given the options for free or very inexpensive calling:

(1) Consider using Skype or another internet calling service (free or very low price) - remember the various options for free internet service at coffee houses, fast food restaurants and other public locations - your hotel may even have free internet in your room or in public areas;
(2) Consider using your cell phone;
(3) Consider using the Skype application on an iPod touch; and
(4) Consider using Google 411 (800 466 4411) (which will find a phone number for you and connect you with that number for free).

A few days can make a big difference in your total airfare cost, especially if you are traveling in August to Europe. Many airlines decrease airfares when demand drops near the end of August after most children have returned to school. If you are looking to reduce your travel costs, be sure to verify whether shifting your trip to the very end of August or beginning of September will affect your airfare. You may be pleasantly surprised that your airfare drops dramatically if you shift your trip to Labor Day week or later.

Are you traveling to Vegas? If so, there are two important rules if you are trying to find the best hotel deal:

(1) If you are flexible with your dates, check hotel rates before you book your trip. Usually, weekday hotel rates are cheaper than weekend hotels rates. Many Las Vegas hotels have availability calendars on their websites - you can generally tell which are the low demand dates. Plan your trip to match the dates with the lowest rates.

(2) Book a cancellable hotel reservation and keep checking rates as your arrival date approaches. Las Vegas hotel rates fluctuate frequently. If demand softens, rates often decline. Also, consider using Priceline and Hotwire to find excellent hotel deals.
