Want to fly without any advance notice coast-to-coast for $99 plus tax/fees? You may be able to do so if you are a college student....

The Deal:
If you are a student age 18-22, you are eligible for fly standby on Airtran for $49, $69 or $99 (plus taxes and fees) per flight segment on nonstop flights. No advance reservation is necessary. Additional restrictions, such as blackout dates, apply. The ability to go to the airport without any advance notice and fly (for instance) from Atlanta to Los Angeles for $99/way (plus tax/fees) can be a great deal, especially when you need to fly immediately. Of course, patience is required, as you are flying standby.

In reality, the best way to find a great vacation deal is to find a great airfare or hotel deal and let that deal determine where you will go. To make this happen, it is helpful to find a website that will show you the best airfares given the parameters you designate - that is where Fare Compare is extremely helpful.

The Deal:
Find a great vacation deal by searching on a website that will show you the best airfares - then choose the destination of your vacation based on the fares.

How:
When using Fare Compare, you can enter broad searches such as "all fares between North America and Asia," and the website will show you the cheapest fares between individual cities in those regions. It will also find you all fares to any destination or any region from your specified origin point.

The Inside Scoop:
You may book the fare you find on any website of your choosing, including an airline's own website or another website that offers you a bonus/incentive for booking on that website.

Travel Deal of the Day (April 1, 2010)

If you are staying multiple days in a hotel, you might want to consider booking your hotel stay piecemeal to ensure you find the best rates.

The Deal:
Sometimes, the total rate at a hotel for five nights is higher than the total rate for a three night booking followed by a separate two night booking (or some other variation that adds to five total nights). Most people do not think about booking separate reservations when staying for an extended time at a hotel, but it may save you money, especially if your multi-day stay is partially over a weekend. Be sure to check whether making separate bookings saves you money - you may be pleasantly surprised.
