Travel Deal of the Day (February 25, 2010)

Many airlines offer what used to be "last minute" specials, sometimes called e-fares, e-savers, last minute deals, etc. Though these fares used to be limited to only the weekend or two following their publication, these fares are often now applicable to a variety of weekends. Whenever you are going to travel over a weekend and are booking within three or four weeks of travel, be sure to check out these "last minute" specials. They often are much cheaper than other available fares. Though these fares are published on airlines' websites, you can use a website such as Smarter Travel to find these fares - Smarter Travel can even send you a weekly e-mail of such specials from your favorite departure city.

How aware are you of the protections provided by your credit card when you travel? If you are not aware, you should give a call to your credit card company and view the terms/conditions of your credit card to ensure you are fully aware of your rights. Many credit cards offer travel insurance protections (of various sorts). This may include trip cancellation insurance and/or car rental coverage (in case of an accident). You should familiarize yourself with these protections to ensure you do not purchase separate coverage that is duplicative of your existing coverage and so that you know your rights should an incident occur. The best time to do this is before your trip - to ensure you protect yourself and prepare yourself fully for your trip (and any unexpected incidents that could occur during your trip).

Travel Deal of the Day (February 18, 2010)

If you are looking to travel this summer, consider the "shoulder" season around April and May to save significant money off of your trip. You can frequently save money on hotels during this shoulder season, you will encounter smaller crowds and you can still take advantage of decent weather in many of the most popular tourist destinations. Along these lines - here is an additional tip. If you have frequent flyer miles, inquire whether your airline of choice offers some routes at a lower, "off-peak" mileage redemption level. For instance, you can fly on American between the United States and Europe for 20,000 miles each way if you complete travel by May 15, 2010. The same kind of deal may also apply if redeeming hotel rewards points.

If you are considering a trip from the US to Europe and you have flexible travel dates, consider going over the next 6 - 8 weeks. It is cold in most of Europe and most school-aged kids are in school. The demand for seats to Europe is far lower now than it will be in 3 months, so you will likely pay far less to go now. So, if you have been wanting to go to Europe, go now. You will find lower airfares, great deals on hotels and better prices for attractions and meals.

Travel Deal of the Day (February 10, 2010)

When you booked your last hotel, did you look at the cost of parking? internet? breakfast? If you did not, you might consider doing so next time, because the price of a bundled room rate (including the extras) may be worthwhile.

The Deal:
At hotels that charge extra for parking, internet, breakfast, etc., you should look at room rates that include only the room as well as rates that include some or all of the extras. Sometimes, you can save money buy purchasing the bundled rate (if you would pay for all the extras during your stay). In fact, sometimes the extra cost of the rate that include all the extras is actually less than the cost of parking alone. So, next time you search for room rates, look at all the possible rates - you may save money.

The Inside Scoop:
Often package or bundled rates do not appear when you run an initial search on a hotel website. Often you must go to a special page for hotel packages or use a special code for a package offered at that hotel. Search around for hotel packages and use a search engine to find packages at your selected hotel.

Travel Deal of the Day (February 3, 2010)

As this has been a bad winter weather season on the East Coast, it is important to note that the best way to be reaccomodated when there is a flight cancellation at the airport is by thinking outside the box. Most people, after arriving at the airport and having a flight cancelled, automatically go to the gate to wait in line to speak with a gate agent. This can often be the wrong thing to do. More often than not, the line is huge, and by the time you arrive at the front of the line, you have few options as those people ahead of you booked the best alternatives. Instead of waiting in line at the gate, here are two alternatives:

(1) Call the airline from your cell phone. You will often get through to a representative quicker than if you stand in line. (You can call while standing in line in case standing in line would be quicker); AND/OR
(2) Go to the main airport ticketing counter or another gate to find a representative to reaccomodate you.

In situations of flight cancellations or bad weather, you want to be reaccomodated sooner rather than later to ensure you have the most possible options. These are a few ways to give you the best opportunity to find options during flight cancellations.
